The Smart Museum of Art and CHA (Chicago Housing Authority) partnered to run a program for 15 rising Juniors and Seniors in high schools from across the city/various schools, but all CHA residents. This 5-week internship program was co-taught by Ashley Finigan - PhD student in History at UChicago and Chicago-based visual artist Luis Sahagun. Running Tuesdays through Friday, from July 11 to August 11, the students met to engage a wide variety of cultural producers and organizations on the south side of Chicago. Some of the institutions visited was the South Side Community Art Center, Dusable Museum of African American History, Chicago Cultural Center (wall of respect exhibition), National Museum of Mexican Art, Arts Incubator, and Stony Island Arts Bank. Additionally, with the leadership of Ashley and Luis, the student curated an exhibition at the museum titled, Together We Can Dream.
